Are Chinese zodiac animal signs enough for compatibility?
No. A birth-year animal is one useful cultural symbol, but it is only one branch of a Four Pillars chart. It cannot by itself determine whether two people will support, misunderstand or clash with each other.
Short answer: use animal-sign compatibility as a conversation starter, not a relationship verdict. A fuller comparison needs the year, month, day and, when known, hour pillars for both people, plus clearly stated calculation rules.
The year animal is one of eight characters
BaZi means Eight Characters. Each chart contains four Heavenly Stems and four Earthly Branches across the year, month, day and hour pillars. The familiar zodiac animal represents only the Earthly Branch of the year pillar.

Check the exact interaction before calling it a clash
The six direct Earthly Branch clashes are Rat-Horse, Ox-Goat, Tiger-Monkey, Rabbit-Rooster, Dragon-Dog and Snake-Pig. Horse and Rooster, for example, are not a direct clash pair.
That still does not prove they are automatically harmonious. Combinations, harms, breaks, element relationships, seasonal strength and the position of each branch can change the context. A single label should not replace the full chart.
For families, avoid turning a symbol into a prediction
- Do not label a parent and child as destined to clash from their year animals.
- Do not treat a newborn's sign as a fixed personality diagnosis.
- Use the chart to frame questions about temperament and routines, then verify them against real behavior.
- Keep medical, developmental and family decisions with qualified professionals and direct observation.
A more reliable comparison checklist
Confirm both solar dates, local birth times when known, birthplace time zones, historical daylight-saving rules, solar-term boundaries and the late Zi-hour convention. If the hour is unknown, compare three pillars and mark hour-dependent claims as uncertain.
